What Is Bodo Agreement

2022.10.27

The Bodo Agreement, also known as the Bodo Peace Accord, is a historic agreement signed in 2020 between the Government of India, the Assam government, and the Bodo community after prolonged unrest and insurgency in the state. The Accord is a significant milestone in the history of the Bodo community as it grants them a certain level of autonomy and recognition in the political framework of Assam.

The Accord aims to bring an end to the long-standing Bodo insurgency, which was marked by violence, bloodshed, and terror. The insurgency was driven by the demands of the Bodo community for a separate state of Bodoland and recognition of their cultural, linguistic, and territorial rights. The Accord has addressed most of these demands and has brought a sense of relief and hope for the Bodo people.

The Bodo Agreement has various provisions that benefit the Bodo community. Firstly, the agreement provides for the creation of a new administrative unit called the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). This region will have its own elected bodies, enabling the Bodo people to exercise their rights to self-governance and autonomy. The BTR will include four districts of Assam, namely Kokrajhar, Baksa, Udalguri, and Chirang.

Secondly, the Accord provides for the establishment of a Bodo-Kachari Welfare Council, which will help in the economic and social development of the Bodo-Kachari community. The council will undertake various developmental activities, such as the construction of roads, schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure.

Thirdly, the Accord provides for the formation of a Special Protection Group (SPG), which will be responsible for the security of the Bodo community. The SPG will be a paramilitary force that will ensure the safety and security of the Bodo people and their properties.

In conclusion, the Bodo Agreement is a significant step towards peace and development in the state of Assam. The Accord has brought an end to the long-standing Bodo insurgency and has paved the way for the recognition of the cultural, linguistic, and territorial rights of the Bodo community. With the establishment of the BTR, the Bodo people will have greater autonomy and self-governance, enabling them to shape their future and contribute to the development of Assam.
